Rebel XT auto Flash

Recently the flash on my Rebel XT will not pop out automatically. I have to pry it open manually. Result: I must turn off/on camera a couple of times before the flash is activated. What is the recommendation to fix this problem short of taking it to a repair shop. Thanks,
