Canon EF 200mm f/2.8L II USM
Once you get into the 200mm focal length, you start getting more serious telephoto ability. This is great for capturing candid shots inconspicuously from a very safe distance. Sounds sketchy, but at this range you can really get some authentic photos. The 200 f/2.8 is even better because it's so fast (both wide aperture and focusing). And all this for only $700, which is pretty much a steal for this level of quality.
